Education is meant not only to nurture the excellence already in a gifted person but also to uplift the not-so-gifted, so that she is equipped to safeguard her interests in independent democratic India. The Constitution of India recognizes the SCs and STs as the two most backward groups needing special protection. Further, democracy demands the necessity to protect and foster the interests and needs of the minority groups. In order to enable students belonging to SC / ST / OBC (non-creamy layer) / Minority communities, who need remedial coaching for pursuing higher studies efficiently and to reduce their failure and drop-out rate.
SSP is a Scholar Support Programme new initiative of higher education Department of Higher Education, Govt. of Kerala. This program targeted towards regular and non – self financing colleges. So we can’t provide such initiative to our students’ .As ours is a self financing college. To bridge this gap, we provide programs to students with the support of our management. SSP and remedial coaching cell covered both slow learners and advanced learners. Based on the class wise performance , the slow and advanced learners are identified and due attention is provided for their areas of weakness and are given apposite assistance
Ansar Women’s College, affiliated to the Calicut University has successfully conducted the remedial coaching programme for the academic year 2021-2022. New remedial coaching committee was formed on 21-06-2021 and prepared the entire plan and time table. Maximum priority was given to the students belonging to the SC, ST and OBC categories. It has received whole hearted support from all departments of this college.
In addition to the covid-19 pandemic, online classes were conducted for the students. As this sudden substitution came off, academically below average students were listed out. For improving their academic skills, SSP and Remedial Coaching cell planned to give special attention.
Students are different in terms of learning ability and academic performance. The aim of remedial teaching is to provide learning support to slow learners or academically weaker students through intensive individualistic approach. The instructional materials are designed and given to the students according to their capabilities and needs. Remedial coaching classes are conducted in all departments under the guidance of department coordinators to improve the self-confidence, learning skills and academic performance of weaker students. The slow learners were identified. The classes were conducted in the evening session and the time schedule included one hour from 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm in the respective days.
